Bush administration misses key Sudan sanction deadline, sends wrong message to Khartoum

Washington — A coalition of Darfur advocacy groups today chided the Bush administration's Office of Management and Budget for missing an important deadline yesterday for implementation of a tough sanction against the Khartoum regime — the prohibition of federal contracts with foreign companies helping to fuel the genocide in Sudan. The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act, which President Bush signed into law last December, directed his administration to amend the federal procurement guidelines to require any company seeking to receive or renew U.S. government contracts to certify that it does not have operations in Sudan's oil, mineral extraction, power or defense sectors. The law called for the Bush administration to implement this new guideline within 120 days — a deadline which has passed.

Arrests, Protests and Protection

Dear Friends ~

I am the mother of 14 children. Like mothers everywhere, I worry about their safety and security. But my worries pale in comparison to those of the mothers of Darfur, Sudan. Every day, these courageous women face unimaginable brutality as they do their best to protect their children.

In my family, our mantra is "With knowledge comes responsibility." Today, each of my children is finding his or her way to make a difference. My son Ronan and I work as representatives of the Genocide Intervention Network, which aims to protect people facing genocide and mass atrocity all over the world.

It is an honor to share Mother's Day with the heroic women all over the world who are finding ways to protect their families in the face of tremendous odds. This Mother's Day, I'd like to invite you to join me, my family, and the entire GI-Net team by keeping the mothers of Darfur in your heart.<mother's></mother's>

In peace
Mia Farrow
on behalf of the Genocide Intervention Network

Darfur Groups Urge World Leaders Not to Attend Olympic Opening Ceremonies

In a joint statement, the Save Darfur Coalition, ENOUGH Project, STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition, Genocide Intervention Network and Dream for Darfur, denounced China's continued enabling of Sudan's destructive campaign against Darfuri civilians.

According to a new report, China provided 90%of Sudan's small arms since 2004, when a U.N. arms embargo took effect.

China must stop enabling genocide!

The New York Times ran an article this Sunday on their front page about the most recent round of slaughter in Darfur.
President Bush can do more to end genocide

The president has a chance to secure his legacy as the world leader who ended the genocide in Darfur.. There is much more the United States can do!

Remind the President that Darfur is ON HIS WATCH!

Will peace in Darfur be President Bush's legacy

While at a memorial to the Rwandan genocide on Tuesday, the President outlined his work to end the genocide in Darfur. However, there is much more that the President could be doing; his legacy rests on actions, not words.

Make Darfur the Presidents's Legacy!

GI-Net Expands Its Focus Beyond Darfur

We would like to thank everyone who completed our survey earlier this month. We have been processing the results and they include many great ideas on how we can improve our anti-genocide work. We are excited to incorporate a few of your suggested improvements immediately.

Many people asked that we explore additional conflicts beyond Darfur. Below you can read about the nine "areas of concern" that we are now monitoring.

Several members wanted to know the results of GI-Net action alerts. As you read on,you will find updates from a recent action in which you were asked to participate.

As we finish compiling the results of the survey, we will continue to incorporate your ideas and suggestions. If you have not done so already, please take a moment to complete the survey online.

Darfur Activists Press White House for Full-Time Sudan Envoy

Following reports that Andrew Natsios has recently resigned from his post as President Bush's Special Envoy to Sudan, Darfur activists joined together in pressing the White House to immediately tap a full-time envoy and team focused on ending the genocide in Darfur and bringing peace to all of Sudan. In a joint statement, the groups — including the Save Darfur Coalition, the ENOUGH Project, and the Genocide Intervention Network — said lessons must be learned from past diplomatic failures, if the Sudanese people will ever realize a lasting peace and security.

Federal Government Takes Aim at Sinopec: Will Alaska?

Today, in a bipartisan show of force, the United States House of Representatives passed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act by a vote of 411 to 0. Last week the Senate unanimously approved the measure which now needs only President Bush’s signature to become law. The bill would prohibit federal contracts with companies fueling the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan, including current Alaska Gasline Inducement Act bidder, Sinopec. The bill also authorizes individual states to independently enforce a similar prohibition.

Darfur Legislation Blocked in the Senate

This is a busy time of the year for Darfur activists, with the campaign season heating up and anti-genocide legislation moving in Congress. GI-Net has called on our members several times recently to take action by attending events and film screenings and contacting legislators about passing the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (SADA). Your hard work and commitment has paid off -- read on for an update on this important legislation.

But there's still a lot of work to be done. As the primaries grow nearer, activists around the country are organizing to make an impact on the campaigns. One major resource at their disposal is the number of hard-hitting documentaries about Darfur that have been released in 2007. In this issue:

Japanese Firms Cut Sudan Oil Imports

Another major Japanese generator, Kyushu Electric Power Company, took similar action and urged importers to seek alternative varieties of crude.

US Congress to Foreign Companies: Support Khartoum, Lose Our Contracts

The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (SADA), authored by Sens. Christopher Dodd and Richard Shelby, will be considered by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 10:00 AM. SADA would authorize state and local governments to divest from companies that support the Khartoum government at the expense of marginalized populations in Sudan and would prohibit federal contracts with those companies unless they implement substantial humanitarian programs in response to the Darfur genocide.

New York Times Columnist Highlights Sudan Divestment Campaign As Way to Pressure Genocidal Regime

Six states and more than 30 universities have restricted their Sudan-related investments, identified on the Sudan Divestment Task Force’s website, www.SudanDivestment.org, a part of the Genocide Intervention Network.

Survey Reveals Despite Iraq, Americans Want United States to Take Action to Stop Genocide in Darfur

Nationwide Sudan Divestment Movement Gains Steam with Vocal Support of Congressional Leaders

Bush Signs Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, Endorsing Strong Diplomatic Pressure to End Genocide

The Genocide Intervention Network commends President George W. Bush for signing the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, which will impose economic and political pressure on the government of Sudan for its pursuit of genocide in Darfur. The signing of the DPAA follows recent appropriation by Congress of $20 million in support to the African Union peacekeeping mission already in Sudan. GI-Net calls on the president to enforce the important provisions of the DPAA, including freezing the assets of individuals complicit in genocide and denying port entry to any cargo ship or oil tanker engaged in business with Sudan.

UN Security Council Puts Onus on Sudan Government to End Genocide in Darfur

The Genocide Intervention Network today commends the work of the United States and Great Britain in gaining passage for a resolution in the United Nations Security Council authorizing a UN peacekeeping force in Darfur, Sudan, where genocide has raged for the past three years. "Sudan should immediately allow the expansion of the current UN force in Southern Sudan into Darfur," says GI-Net Executive Director Mark Hanis. "Any further delay will result in more lives lost to a genocide in which -- just this month -- UN humanitarian head Jan Egeland said 'our nightmares have become realities.' Should Sudan decline to allow effective protection of their own civilians, the UN should not hesitate to proceed, given the clear international support for ending the genocide."

Report: Congress Falls Short in Effort to End Darfur Genocide

The first-ever "scorecard" grading Congress on its efforts to end the genocide in Darfur, Sudan shows that a large majority of legislators have failed to follow through with a unanimous congressional resolution in 2004 calling for an end to the genocide. The scorecard, available online at www.DarfurScores.org, also recognizes a bipartisan coalition of representatives and senators vigorously supporting civilian protection for endangered civilians in Darfur.

Two Years After Declaration of Genocide, Congress Could Do More for Darfur

Two years ago, on July 22, 2004, Congress unanimously declared that the government-sponsored atrocities against civilians in the Darfur region of western Sudan constituted genocide. Yet today the genocide continues, with over 400,000 killed and another 2.5 million displaced from their homes. Today, the Genocide Intervention Network recognizes the progress that has been made -- due in no small part to the efforts of thousands of activists who have pressured their government to do more. However, GI-Net's report, "A Pending Promise: A Declaration of Genocide Two Years Later," also cites the ways in which Congress has yet to live up to its promise.

United States Fails to Support Peacekeepers in Darfur

The Genocide Intervention Network today expresses extreme disappointment in the United States’ decision to decline even the most minimal support for peacekeepers in Darfur, Sudan. US leaders have refused to fund the African Union peacekeeping force currently protecting Darfurian civilians beyond September, effectively condemning hundreds of thousands to death in a genocide that continues unabated.

UN Fails to Take Decisive Action on Darfur

The Genocide Intervention Network today expresses serious concern over the UN’s failure to take meaningful action to end genocide in Darfur.
